The Raven is a narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1845. It is his most famous poetic composition, since it gave him international recognition. Its musicality, the stylized language and the supernatural atmosphere that it manages to recreate are remarkable. Poe chose a raven to be the central theme of the story because he wanted a creature that did not reason but was capable of speaking. He decided to use a raven, which he who considered equally capable of speech as a parrot when matching this with the desired tone of the poem. Poe said that the raven was intended to symbolize the sad and endless memory. He was also inspired by Grip the Raven from Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of ‘Eighty by Charles Dickens.
